Intelligent Design, Optimized Longevity: The Lemmo One mk2

Light Electric Micro Mobility (LEMMO) is a smart ebike brand designed and manufactured by the German company HYPATHS. They unveiled their first ebike, the LEMMO ONE, at the Frankfurt Show in 2022.  In just two years, LEMMO has quietly achieved real success with its models inspired by gravel bike design.  Born from a collaboration with the Dutch designers at Springtime Design, Lemmo won a RED DOT Design Award in 2023.

The Lemmo One E+Bike, featuring E-plus technology, offers a unique riding experience by combining both electric and traditional cycling modes.  This is achieved through the Smartpac, a detachable unit housing key electronic components. With a seamless switch between modes, riders can enjoy effortless electric power or pure pedal power, adapting the bike to their needs and preferences.

The ONE MK2, ONE MK2 MAX, and Limited Editions

The Lemmo ONE MK2 is built for commuters, with a seamless frame, cables hidden inside the frame, and a sleek, powerful (40Nm) design that's lightweight for an ebike. Its Trekker version packs even more torque (56Nm) and includes a front fork and seat post with a suspension system.

It comes in a range of sizes and you can even choose your drivetrain: go with a classic chain Shimano Deore 10-speed derailleur system or a Gates CDX belt drive.

This choice isn't available on the ONE MAX.

Its modular design is incredibly smart. To turn it into a regular muscle-powered bike, its Dual Hub concept remove all motor resistance when pedaling, while also removing the 6.6 pounds 3 kg of the removable battery. This battery is housed in a Smartpac which stores not only the battery, but also electronic components such as the motor control, a GPS tracker, and it can even be used as a power bank.

Without the Smartpac, the Lemmo One weighs around 33 pounds 15 kg, making it a muscle-powered bike with a weight comparable to a mountain bike.

Conversely, to switch to electric mode, simply slide the Smartpac onto the rack inside the frame's triangle.

Smartpac

The Lemmo Smartpac is a truly innovative feature, designed with tech-savvy nomads in mind. This all-in-one device seamlessly integrates the ebike's battery, a CAN bus network that supports 4G networks, GPS tracking and FOTA for wireless updating of the system. into a sleek and stylish package.  With dimensions of 81 x 210 x 85 mm (roughly 3.18 x 8.26 x 3.34 inches) and weighing in at 6.6 pounds (3kg), it's both portable and practical.

Beyond powering the Lemmo One, the Smartpac functions as a power bank. Under its weatherproof cover, wel find the battery's proprietary charging port alongside USB-A and USB-C ports, allowing to conveniently charge laptop and smartphone. This clever design not only contributes to the bike’s streamlined profile, but also allows for the full potential of the Smartpac to be used freely.

Inside the Smartpac: the battery and IOT components

"Smartpac’s battery contains 30 pieces of 21700 Li-ion cells with a rated power of 531wh. This is equivalent to 15 pieces of 10000mha power banks and can support a 100km ride.

A Smartpac battery can be charged 800 times before its cycle life drops to 80% capacity. A new generation Smartpac communication network will be required after approximately 5 years of use. Old, diminished battery from Smartpac can be downgraded and used for portable energy storage or be recycled."

Three colours are currently available for the Smartpac's removable fabric protective cover.

Dual Mode Hub

"The Lemmo ONE is equipped with a dual-mode hub that allows to switch from electric bike mode (E-Mode) to manual bike mode (M-Mode) with a simple rotation of the cap. The cap will disconnect the clutch from the motor and the hub will roll, without any resistance."

"M-Mode (no resistance, 10w less than other hub motors at 25km/h) - Just pull and rotate the cap switch 90 degrees, and you will be in traditional bike mode. The clutch connecting the motor core with the shell becomes disconnected, allowing the hub to rotate freely as a normal bike hub."

"E-Mode (ONE MK2 40Nm ; ONE MK2 MAX 56Nm Torque, 250w, silence) –

By simply turning on the switch, you will be in e-bike mode.

The e-bike clutch will function and the hub will become a powerful motor that operates in near silence."

Compared to torque sensor placed within the bottom bracket, the torque sensor is integrated into the dual mode hub offering superior response time and smooth pedaling.

Empowering Riders: The Lemmo One's Self-Repair Approach

This bike has been intelligently designed from top to bottom with optimized longevity in mind. You can see this just by reading the user manual, which encourages the buyer to learn as much as possible about their ebike so they can repair the Lemmo One themselves whenever possible.

The manual's intro states:  "Know that your electric bike is not too complex."  Indeed, for those who, like me, have had to disassemble and reassemble their ebike to change a headlight or controller on an ebike with hidden cables, it's certainly tedious, but not complex.

The online user manual includes a set of video tutorials for replacing faulty parts yourself, like in the example below where the display panel, front light, and beeper can be easily swapped out.

My take:

I bookmarked Lemmo Future's page a long time ago, back when they only had one model.

I'm not going to go easy on a smart e-bike that I would love to own for the following reasons: its realistic vision of the needs of our time, its successful design and its embedded technology which is balanced, minimal and essential. Finally, the Lemmo One MK2 is an excellent smart e-bike, offering a very interesting price-quality ratio compared to the competition.

The modular and upgradeable vision based on eco-responsibility is pleasing, it is a strong argument, which fades a little with the presentation of new e-bikes. Inevitable expansion of the range on either limited editions or a trekking model? Let's hope they stop there and implement the eco-responsible upgrade that the brand has become an ambassador for.
