Urtopia Joy Carbon Glacier Blue color
The Joy Carbon is one of Urtopia's latest models, currently available in the North American market (Class 2, Class 3 with unlocking).
Like all the brand's ebikes, the Joy features their comprehensive smart onboard ecosystem and is built around a carbon fiber frame.
The result? A cool-looking smart ebike that blends the playfulness of a kid's bike with the utility of a mini e-cargo to create an ultralight and intelligent fat-tire ride!
It's a successful fusion of comfort and versatility, thanks to its fat tires and a lightweight, accessible step-through frame.

If there's one quality that sets URTOPIA apart, it's the brand's ability to anticipate trends, designing smart e-bikes as soon as a new one emerges. (A good example is their integration of ChatGPT as an AI assistant right after its global release).
Now, the JOY makes its debut in this new hybrid category of fat e-bikes and e-cargo bikes.
You'll notice its centered double kickstand, a typical feature of cargo and utility bikes.
Compared to longtail cargo e-bikes, which can weigh over 80 lbs (around 36 kg), the JOY weighs only 50 lbs (23 kg). In terms of dimensions, the JOY is also slightly more compact than a typical cargo bike.
Urtopia didn't have much trouble designing the JOY. A closer look at the 2024 FUSION e-SUV model reveals it likely inspired the Carbon JOY's design.
The bikes share similar hardware and features, including :
a 330 lbs payload capacity,.
Both also use a Shimano 8-speed derailleur and
...
...a step-through frame (Toray carbon fibers)...
...a thumb throttle and four pedal-assist levels (eco, tour, boost, and turbo)
...a 529.2Wh Samsung battery that's integrated under the frame (it looks quite large in a video I saw).
The only differences with the FUSION are in...
...the motor power (500W with 750W in peak versus 1000W) and the range (70 miles versus 120 miles).
...the front suspension fork on the JOY also has 50mm of travel, compared to the FUSION's 60mm.
Just like the FUSION model, Urtopia's JOY promises the ability to carry up to 330 lbs (150 kg).
This weight is distributed as follows: a maximum of 200 lbs (91 kg) for the rider and 130 lbs (59 kg) for cargo.
The cargo weight can be further broken down, with up to 100 lbs (45 kg) on the rear and 30 lbs (14 kg) on the front, to carry items like a child seat, packages, or luggage.
The JOY is more maneuverable than a classic cargo bike and is easy to ride, delivering very responsive torque (up to 60Nm) with no noticeable lag. For braking, it's equipped with hydraulic disc brakes that have a power cut-off sensor. Comfort features include the saddle, faux leather grips, and cruiser-style handlebars that are 0-60° adjustable. However, with a handlebar height of 1011mm, it will only be suitable for short to average-height riders.
Urtopia made a name for itself by integrating a smart interface with an LED dot-matrix screen. However, starting with the FUSION model, the brand abandoned that particular screen and now integrates a color LCD HMI display directly into the handlebars.

On the JOY, there's no specific information regarding integrated speakers, a microphone for voice unlock or commands, a fingerprint sensor, or haptic control buttons. Furthermore, the Urtopia website's "Urtopia Connect Service" 4G/eSim subscription doesn't mention the JOY model.
All that is confirmed is the presence of Bluetooth, GPS, and gyroscope sensors. These core modules allow the Urtopia app to enable features like navigation, ride recording, and social media sharing. They also power an advanced anti-theft system that includes a motion alert, real-time GPS tracking, and the ability to remotely lock the bike.
Recent app updates have also added the option to configure the integrated lights. Finally, the app offers direct integration with Apple Health, Google Maps, STRAVA, and ChatGPT.

The conventional image of the e-cargo bike—too long and too heavy—is fading away in the face of this new, more attractive design.
The main advantage of the Urtopia JOY Carbon is its portability. Its carbon fiber construction makes it significantly lighter and gives it a more appealing design. The JOY builds on the experience of the FUSION model to meet the needs of families often deterred by cargo bikes that are difficult to maneuver, especially for those with a smaller build. The goal is to be able to carry the e-cargo bike yourself and transport luggage, a child, or groceries with less bulk and greater agility. For city dwellers, the JOY's compact design makes it an ideal fit.
And yet, when you compare the JOY's dimensions to a Rad Power Cargo bike, the difference is only a matter of a few inches. It's a small difference that is quickly overshadowed by the bike's design and aesthetics. A potential buyer will likely lean toward this more compact and lighter solution. With a spec sheet almost identical to a standard cargo bike, you're riding a machine that weighs nearly half as much.
However, there is a lack of clear information about the onboard technology. I have to wonder why Urtopia hasn't provided more details on its web pages (for the US and Germany). While we wait for more specifics, we have to settle for the basic features available through the app: a Bluetooth connection, possibly an eSIM, and GPS.
For a company that has prided itself on being a pioneer of fully connected smart e-bikes, this lack of detail is seriously disappointing. Let's just hope that these features don't turn out to be paid add-ons.
